Irish Grinstead, a member of the ’90s R&B girl group 702, has passed away at the age of 43. She was best known for her role in 702, alongside fellow vocalists Kameelah Williams and LeMisha Grinstead. Her death was confirmed by Cory Taylor, a representative for 702, although the exact cause of her death has not been disclosed.
LeMisha Grinstead, Irish’s sister and bandmate, shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram, expressing her sorrow: “It is with deep sadness that I must inform you that my beloved sister and friend has passed away tonight. She faced a long battle, and now she is at peace. That girl shone as bright as the stars!”
LeMisha also highlighted Irish’s inner beauty, in addition to her external grace. She reminisced about the joy of sharing the stage with her and emphasized that this cherished memory would stay with her forever.
Irish Grinstead had been grappling with health issues in the months leading up to her demise. In December 2022, 702 revealed on Instagram that she was taking a “medical leave of absence” due to serious medical problems, without specifying the nature of these issues. The group expressed their hope for her swift recovery and asked for privacy during this challenging period. They also mentioned their plans to continue representing 702 during upcoming performances in 2023.
Irish Grinstead gained recognition in the music industry as a member of 702, a group whose name was inspired by their Las Vegas area code. In 1996, they made their debut with the gold-certified album “No Doubt,” featuring the hit single “Steelo,” a collaboration with Missy Elliott. 702 released two more albums, a self-titled sophomore album in 1999, and “Star” in 2003. The “702” album achieved platinum status, with the chart-topping single “Where My Girls At?”
Irish Grinstead’s contribution to 702 left an indelible mark on the R&B music scene, and her memory will be cherished by fans and her fellow group members alike.
