Olivia Rodrigo, the 20-year-old singing sensation, recently opened up about the inspiration behind one of the tracks on her latest album, “Guts.” In an interview on Radio 1’s Live Lounge, Olivia revealed that her best friend, Madison Hu, played a significant role in inspiring the song “Logical,” a poignant ballad that delves into the complexities of a manipulative relationship.
Despite the widespread assumption that Olivia’s deeply relatable lyrics are drawn from her own experiences, she clarified that Madison served as the muse for “Logical.” The two friends first crossed paths while working together on the Disney Channel show “Bizaardvark.”
The creative spark for the song occurred during a casual conversation the friends had during a night out. Olivia recalled how Madison expressed her feelings about a tumultuous relationship with the phrase, “it’s just not logical.” This statement resonated deeply with Olivia, who realized its potential as a song lyric. She confessed, “I actually stole her life experience for the song. I was like, ‘wow, that’s interesting, let me write that down.’ So, I owe her a lot.”
Amidst her candid admission, Olivia jokingly warned her friends to be prepared for their own lives to become song material in the future. She explained that her songwriting process varies each time, emphasizing that she draws inspiration from real-life experiences and emotions.
Olivia also shed light on her creative partnership with Daniel Nigro, highlighting how their collaboration enhances the personal touch of her songs. She expressed that the tracks on her album “Guts” are reflections of her personal growth and a means to address her thoughts and feelings.
“Guts,” Olivia’s second album, achieved an impressive debut by reaching the number one spot upon its release. Throughout her career, Olivia’s music has often sparked speculation about the subjects of her lyrics. However, she believes that leaving some details to the imagination of her listeners can actually strengthen the impact of her songs.
She emphasized the universality of her music, stating that even though she writes about personal experiences, people from various backgrounds can relate to her songs. Olivia recently graced the stage on Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month, treating fans to a performance of “get him back!” and a surprise cover of Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season.”
Noah Kahan himself expressed his excitement on Instagram after learning that Olivia had covered his song. Olivia’s electrifying live session was recorded in Los Angeles approximately a month ago, marking another milestone in her blossoming career.
