In an exclusive announcement, Derrick Anderson, a former U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret and combat veteran, declared his candidacy on Monday with the aim of flipping what is anticipated to be one of the most fiercely contested congressional seats in the 2024 elections from Democratic control.
Anderson, representing the Republican Party, shared his motivation for running, citing a desire to provide leadership to Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, which he argues has been lacking under the current Democratic representative, Abigail Spanberger.
Anderson, who has served six tours of duty in the Middle East as part of the Global War on Terror, expressed his frustration with the Biden administration’s handling of foreign policy, stating that he could no longer remain on the sidelines.
He believes that President Biden and career politicians prioritise their own interests over the welfare of the American people, including issues such as public safety, job opportunities, border security, and education.
Having served in the Army from 2006 to 2014, Anderson made his first bid for Congress in 2022.
He narrowly lost the Republican primary that year to Yesli Vega, who was subsequently defeated by Spanberger in the general election. However, Spanberger has indicated her intention to run for governor of Virginia in 2025, foregoing a fourth term in Congress, potentially leaving her seat more vulnerable in the upcoming election.
Virginia’s 7th Congressional District has consistently been a top target for Republicans seeking to regain control from the Democrats.
Anderson believes that his candidacy could help secure a Republican victory, particularly in the absence of Spanberger on the ballot. He expressed his commitment to serving the district and the nation, emphasising his determination to run a sincere and dedicated campaign.
In a video released as part of his campaign launch, Anderson highlighted his humble beginnings, including working at his mother’s restaurant in Spotsylvania County, where he mopped floors and washed dishes.
He then attended Virginia Tech on an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarship, becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college.
As one of five candidates vying for the Republican nomination in the district, Anderson is poised to contribute to the party’s efforts to expand its slim majority in the House of Representatives in the upcoming elections.
The Republican Party is aiming to capitalise on the perceived unpopularity of President Biden, following its success in gaining control of the chamber during the 2022 midterm elections, albeit falling short of initial expectations.
