Actor Bob Odenkirk has candidly admitted that he initially disregarded the medical advice of a “cranky” conservative doctor during a recent podcast conversation with comedian Tig Nataro.
Odenkirk shared his regrets about his previous skepticism toward the doctor’s counsel, which had transpired during a health scare on the set of “Better Call Saul” in 2021.
Reflecting on the incident, Odenkirk recounted his encounter with the conservative heart specialist at Cedar-Sinai when he turned 50.
He recalled how the doctor had prominently displayed signs in his office proclaiming, “We do not accept Obamacare.” Over time, Odenkirk found himself disliking this aspect of the doctor’s personality.
The actor explained that the doctor, with whom he had maintained a 20-year medical relationship, had recommended he start taking statins, a medication used to lower cholesterol levels.
Initially, Odenkirk had reservations, stating, “Well, I don’t know. I don’t have a family history of heart disease.” Nevertheless, the doctor urged him to take the medication.
Odenkirk ultimately sought a second opinion from a different doctor who advised against taking the medication, saying, “You don’t need medicine at this point.” Unfortunately, Odenkirk experienced a heart attack, and in hindsight, he believes the initial doctor’s advice may have been correct.
He emphasized that the doctor’s conservative views should not overshadow his competence in assessing health and making necessary recommendations.
In July 2021, Odenkirk collapsed while filming “Better Call Saul” and was promptly hospitalized. Remarkably, he returned to the set in September 2021 and resumed his role.
Speaking about the incident in March 2022 during an interview, Odenkirk acknowledged the shock and trauma experienced by his co-stars and crew members who had supported him throughout the ordeal.
Bob Odenkirk’s story serves as a reminder that health decisions should be based on medical expertise rather than political affiliations, highlighting the importance of seeking professional advice when it comes to one’s well-being.
